Sam never set out to open a bakery he insists it was the other way around. “I didn’t find cheesecake. Cheesecake found me,” he said. While working at the Hilton and struggling to make ends meet, he began baking cheesecakes on the side. Friends and family raved, and soon he saw a gap in the market. “I was tired of traveling up north for good cheesecake,” he said. “I wanted to bring it here so people would travel south for it.”

Like many entrepreneurs, Sam stumbled. Budgeting, permits, and equipment caught him off guard. “I didn’t even know I needed a grease trap,” he admitted. At one point, he nearly lost everything. Then came an act of mercy from Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. “I almost blew the opportunity by asking for too much,” Sam said. “But Mr. Cathy gave me $5,000.” The experience taught him humility and leverage. Introduced through a local basketball program, he met Willie, who later introduced him to Janice Malone, with whom he shared the Streetwise MBA program. “For years, I operated without a business plan,” he said. “Streetwise MBA gave me a roadmap.” “Now he encourages entrepreneurs to lean on resources like Vivian’s Door, where the most valuable guidance is shared with a spirit of mentorship.”

A Vision Beyond Cheesecake

Sammy Cheezecake is thriving, but Sam’s vision is bigger: to build the world’s largest bakery beside the busiest airport, and to become not just a baker but a developer. He dreams of mentoring other restaurant owners and creating holistic support systems blending church, counseling, fitness, financial education, and real estate into a network that uplifts entire communities. He even envisions tenants in his future developments contributing to Vivian’s Door and growing alongside their businesses.

Sam’s menu reflects his passion. He recommends German chocolate, strawberry, classic New York style, and Oreo cheesecake. But the crown jewel is his red velvet cheesecake with nuts, outselling every other flavor two-to-one. “We specialize in cheesecake,” Sam said proudly. “It’s not a side item. It’s what we do best.”
