More Than a Ride: How Nett Express Is Moving a Community Forward

More Than a Ride: How Nett Express Is Moving a Community Forward

Before Vivian’s Door, I was working hard, but now I’m working with purpose – Ninette Ayivor.

After breaking both hips, a simple trip to the doctor became a source of anxiety for one Nett Express’s clients, who is a senior. No longer able to walk without assistance, she relied on a walker and lived on a fixed income, yet every medical appointment brought new uncertainty.

What should have been a routine journey often felt like an exhausting gamble. Would the rideshare vehicle have enough space for her walker? Would the driver be willing to help her safely in and out of the car? Would unexpected surge pricing force her to choose between transportation and another essential expense?

When Ninette Ayivor heard her story, she saw more than one woman’s transportation challenge. She saw the daily reality faced by countless seniors, individuals with disabilities, and vulnerable residents whose independence depends on reliable transportation. She saw where she could fill a void to service a need in her community.

“This is only one experience of many that made me realize our community has critical transportation barriers,” Ayivor recalls.

Ayivor’s realization of this critical gap and her passion for filling it marked the birth of her transportation business — Nett Express.

But Nett Express is not simply a transportation company. In Mobile, Alabama, and across the Gulf Coast region, Ayivor is building something rooted in a much bigger idea: that the ability to get where you need to go is part of fully participating in life.

When Transportation Becomes Access

It is easy to think of transportation as movement, a car, a road, a destination.

But for someone without a dependable vehicle, transportation can determine whether they reach a doctor, get to work, attend school, buy groceries, pick up a prescription, or participate in their community.

That is the space Net Express seeks to fill by providing private transportation and delivery services that support seniors, working families, people with disabilities, and others who may not have access to dependable transportation.

For Ayivor, the mission is straightforward: “to provide affordable, private transportation and delivery services that are prompt, reliable, and safe.”

Yet the reason behind that mission is deeply personal. Before Nett Express existed, Ayivor spent about seven years driving for rideshare platforms.

Satisfied riders can set up repeat bookings. But beneath those requests was a pattern: people were not simply looking for another driver. They were looking for someone they could count on.

Someone who would show up.

Someone who understood their needs.

Someone who would make the journey less stressful.

Those experiences eventually pushed Ayivor to create a transportation company that could offer more than rideshare networks often provide: consistency and relationships.

Building Trust One Ride at a Time

Net Express sets itself apart from the competition by going the extra mile with consistent scheduling, direct pickup and drop-off, no surge pricing or unexpected fees, and a more personalized experience.

For customers who live on fixed incomes or depend on transportation for essential appointments, those details are not minor conveniences. This means they can  plan with confidence and worry less about what the day will bring.

There is also something intangible at work: trust.

When customers repeatedly interact with a trusted driver, transportation becomes more personal. The driver is no longer simply the person behind the wheel but someone familiar.

That matters especially for senior citizens and people with disabilities, for whom patience, accessibility, and familiarity can transform the experience of getting around.

Nett Express also serves areas where public transit or rideshare options may be limited. For Ayivor, reliable transportation is not simply a service. It is part of the infrastructure that a community needs to function.

The Road to Entrepreneurship

But building a business around that vision required Ayivor to take a risk of her own.

While developing Net Express, she worked as an over-the-road commercial truck driver, traveling across 48 states. The demands of the job made it difficult to build momentum, while vehicle reliability issues sometimes directly affected her ability to serve customers.

Still, she kept going.

Eventually, she made a decision that would change the direction of her life: she left an 11-year career in commercial trucking to build Nett Express full-time.

It was not an easy choice. But the first year of entrepreneurship gave her something that could not be measured simply in revenue or growth.

“The business milestone that I’m most proud of so far is making it through my first year as a full-time entrepreneur,” she says.

For Ayivor, making it through that first year was evidence that the leap had been worth taking.

Learning to Build With Purpose

Like many entrepreneurs, Ayivor’s journey has not been about simply having an idea. It has been about learning how to turn that idea into something sustainable.

Her connection with Vivian’s Door became an important part of that process.

Through business resources, mentorship, accountability, access to capital, and connections with other professionals, Ayivor gained practical tools to strengthen Net Express.

But perhaps the most significant change was internal. “I left every class with practical tools that I could apply directly to my business,” she explains.

The experience also challenged her to think beyond operating a service and toward building an enduring company.

“Before Vivian’s Door, I was working hard, but now I’m working with purpose,” she says. That distinction matters. Working hard can keep a business moving. Working with purpose gives it direction. Ayivor began refining her pricing, policies, systems, target market, and long-term strategy. The goal was no longer simply to survive from one day to the next. It was to build something that would last.

A Ride as Civic Access and Philanthropy

Beyond transportation, Nett Express provides civic access and promotes Black philanthropy. The company provides rides to medical appointments, work, school, airports, grocery stores, and other essential destinations. It also delivers prescriptions, hot meals, hygiene products, and other necessities.

When it helps someone get to work, it is supporting economic opportunity.

When someone is taken to the grocery store, it helps meet a basic need.

And when it takes someone to the polls, it is helping remove a barrier to civic participation.

During elections, Nett Express provides free rides to the polls, removing one more barrier for residents who might otherwise struggle to get there. For Ayivor, this is part of what it means to serve a community. This is her way of giving back and making her community stronger. Transportation is not only about getting from one place to another; sometimes it is about making sure someone has access to their voice.

That is also one way Black philanthropy shows up in everyday life. It can look like giving money, but it can also look like giving time, providing a service, opening access, and using what you have to help someone else participate more fully in their community.

Through Nett Express, Ayivor is using transportation as a tool for both mobility and opportunity,  whether the destination is a doctor’s office, a workplace, a grocery store, or the voting booth.

A Bigger Road Ahead

Ayivor is not content to keep Nett Express where it is. Her vision is to grow the company into one of the most trusted transportation and delivery services in the Gulf Coast region.

She hopes to move beyond operating as a one-person business, build a team of professional drivers, expand the fleet, and develop partnerships with businesses, healthcare providers, and  schools while preserving the uniqueness of her transportation services.

But the legacy she is building is not only measured by the number of vehicles on the road. It is measured by the people those vehicles help move forward.

The senior citizen who can make it to her medical appointment without wondering whether the vehicle will accommodate her needs.

The worker who can get to a shift.

The parent who can get where they need to go.

The person picking up a prescription.

The resident who wants to vote.

For all of them, the journey begins with something deceptively simple: a way to get there.
