Back in April of last year, our Community Conversation Health Unlocked: Access, Alignment, and Action brought residents, practitioners, and changemakers together for a powerful exploration of what it truly means to build healthier communities. Time has passed, but the insights still echo—shaping how we think, collaborate, and move forward today.

A Snapshot of the Conversation

Guided by moderator India Washington, MPH, NBC-HWC, the discussion unfolded with honesty and urgency. Each panelist brought a vital perspective that helped illuminate the everyday realities and systemic challenges of community health:

  • Mecquicael Larkin Clarke, CRNP, emphasized how culturally competent care shifts outcomes and deepens trust.
  • Nichole Edwards, Senior Market Advisor at BlueCross and BlueShield of Alabama, broke down the role of coverage, cost, and education in expanding access.
  • Danny Patterson, Coalitions Coordinator at the Gulf States Health Policy Center, highlighted policy’s power in bridging gaps that communities feel most.
  • Tokie Dunn, Director of Community Prevention Programs at the Mobile County Health Department, underscored how prevention begins with connection and consistency.
  • Angelia Dickinson, MS, ALC, ADC, DipACLM, MB-EAT-P, brought whole-person wellness to the forefront, reminding us that mental, emotional, and physical health move together.
  • Orrin O. Davis, PrEP Community Health Worker, shed light on sexual health access and the importance of dismantling stigma so people feel safe seeking support.

Themes That Still Resonate

Even months later, several truths from the April event continue to guide the conversation around community health:

  • Access is more than availability—it’s understanding, trust, and informed choice.
  • Alignment strengthens impact—when sectors share goals, resources stretch farther, and solutions stick.
  • Action must be ongoing—real change grows from consistent effort, not one-time discussions.

Why It Mattered — Then and Now

Attendees shared genuine concerns, personal experiences, and thought-provoking questions that shaped the tone of the evening. Their engagement reminded us that solutions are strongest when they rise from the community itself. The April conversation served as both a checkpoint and a launchpad—helping us see what was working, what was needed, and where we needed to go next.

Looking Ahead

As we continue planning future conversations, we carry the lessons of April with us. Health Unlocked is evolving into a steady movement—one that grows louder, bolder, and more unified with every event.

The work continues, and the path forward feels brighter than ever.
