From Fear to Freedom: How One Woman Turned Her Love for Swimming Into a Mission to Save Lives
From Fear to Freedom: How One Woman Turned Her Love for Swimming Into a Mission to Save Lives
“…use my experience to make a difference…helps prevent drownings,…also builds confidence and creates opportunities for people to enjoy the water safely.” – Khaliyah Berry.
For many people, swimming is simply a fun activity.
For Khaliyah Berry, it is something much deeper. It is confidence. It is healing. It is a purpose. And for the children and adults she teaches every week, it can even be the difference between life and death.

As the founder of KBreezySwim, Berry helps people and families in Mobile overcome their fears, gain confidence, and learn how to stay safe around water. But her journey to becoming a business owner did not begin in a boardroom. It began with a personal passion and a desire to make a difference.
Drowning is the top cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the US, with more than 4,500 deaths each year (CDC). The risk is even greater for Black families: from 2019 to 2021, they made up over 28% of these deaths. In pools, Black children ages 10 to 14 drown at rates 7.6 times higher than white children (CDC Health Disparities). This is the hidden crisis that KBreezySwim was created to address.
She Once Feared the Water. Today She’s Teaching Others to Conquer It.
Ironically, Khaliyah Berry’s story is not just about teaching swimming. It is also about overcoming fear.
Today, she’s a swim instructor, lifeguard, entrepreneur, and author of the children’s book Scared to Strong: The KBreezy Swim Story. But it took years of learning and growing for her to realize swimming could be more than just a hobby.
“Swimming has always been a huge part of my life,” Berry says.
As she spent more time by the water, she noticed something troubling: many kids and adults in her community didn’t know how to swim safely. Some people were scared. Others just never had the chance to learn. She realized she could help change this.
“I could use my experience to make a difference. Teaching others not only helps prevent drownings, but also builds confidence and creates opportunities for people to enjoy the water safely.”
That moment of understanding became the start of KBreezySwim. Each lesson became about more than just floating, kicking, or breathing. It was about helping people believe in themselves.
“Every lesson reminds me that this work is bigger than swimming. It gives me purpose.”
This Is Bigger Than Swimming.
Many businesses begin with an idea. KBreezySwim began with a calling.
Berry remembers a moment when she realized this could be more than just something she enjoyed. She saw lives changing. Children who used to cry before getting in the pool were smiling by the end of class. Adults who had stayed away from water for years were learning to trust themselves again.
Fear slowly turned into confidence for her students.
“Watching children and adults overcome fear, gain confidence, and leave lessons smiling made me realize this was exactly what I was called to do.”
And “shut out” is the right phrase. More than 1 in 3 Black adults (37%) report not knowing how to swim, compared to 15% of adults overall – and about 63% of Black adults have never taken a single swimming lesson (CDC). Much of that traces back to decades of unequal access to pools, not a lack of desire. KBreezySwim exists to close that gap, one lesson at a time.
Those moments showed her that KBreezySwim could be a business that truly makes a difference. It’s not just about teaching swimming, it’s about changing lives.

The Biggest Obstacle Wasn’t Teaching People to Swim
Like many business owners, Berry soon learned that passion by itself isn’t enough to build a business. One of her biggest challenges wasn’t about teaching at all. It was finding a place to teach.
Since KBreezySwim needs access to swimming pools, finding a permanent spot has been one of the company’s toughest problems. Without a reliable facility, every season brings uncertainty.
Berry has traveled to different locations, rented pools, worked through temporary agreements, and repeatedly searched for new places where she could continue serving her clients.
“Constantly searching for a place to teach while trying to keep my business growing has been one of the hardest obstacles I’ve faced,” She notes. For many small business owners, customers are not the biggest challenge. The real challenge is infrastructure. For a swim business, the pool is everything.
When Life Almost Took Everything Away
Every entrepreneur has moments when quitting seems easier than continuing.
For Berry, that moment came in 2026. Between February and June, she went through a serious health crisis that almost changed everything. While she was in the hospital getting ready for major surgery, she faced another big setback.
She lost one of her pool contracts.
Instead of focusing only on recovery, she found herself making phone call after phone call searching for another location to keep KBreezySwim alive. At the same time, doctors told her that her health situation was complicated and uncertain.
“There were moments when I felt defeated and wondered if I would even make it through.”
Many people would have stopped there. Berry chose a different path. After recovering, she says the experience changed her perspective forever. “I realized God kept me here for a reason.”
The support of her family, friends, clients, and community reminded her that she wasn’t alone on this journey.
“I believe I am simply a vessel for the work I have been called to do.” That belief became stronger than the obstacles standing in her way.
One Book. Hundreds of Lives Inspired.
Berry’s mission goes beyond the swimming pool. She is also the author of the children’s book Scared to Strong: The KBreezy Swim Story.

The book inspires young readers to face their fears with courage and confidence, using Berry’s own story as an example. For Berry, writing the book is another way to reach kids before they even get in the water.
Whether she is teaching in a pool or reading from her book, the message remains the same. Fear does not have to define your future.
“I am incredibly proud of publishing Scared to Strong. Seeing the positive feedback from both my swim lessons and my book has been incredibly rewarding.”
Building Confidence One Lesson at a Time
Anyone can demonstrate swimming techniques, but Berry believes real teaching requires more. It’s about connection. Every student has their own story. Some are excited, some are nervous, and others have been afraid of water for years.
That is why KBreezySwim focuses on understanding each student’s individual needs before introducing swimming skills.
Lessons are broken into simple, manageable steps so students really understand what they’re learning, not just copy instructions. As trust grows, confidence grows. Eventually, independence follows.
“We teach on a personal level by understanding each client’s individual needs and emotions.” This personal approach has become one of the company’s biggest strengths.
The Business Lessons That Changed Everything
Building a successful business requires more than talent. It requires guidance.
Berry credits Vivian’s Door with helping shape both her business and her mindset. With mentorship, business training, and steady encouragement, she learned that being an entrepreneur isn’t just about starting a business. It’s about building a business that lasts.
“Vivian’s Door taught me that building a successful business isn’t just about getting started. It’s about creating something that will last.”
Those lessons helped her look past today’s problems and start planning. “They helped shape me into a stronger, more confident business owner with a vision for lasting success.” She remarks.
The Legacy She’s Really Building
When asked what she hopes people remember about KBreezySwim, Berry answers right away: “It’s not about awards, recognition, or profits.” It’s about people.
She hopes her business will be known for saving lives, lowering drowning risks, and making water safety possible for every family in the community. Even more, she wants every child and adult who finishes a KBreezySwim lesson to believe they can do more than they ever thought possible.
“I want KBreezySwim to leave a legacy of saving lives, reducing drowning rates, and making water safety accessible for everyone.”

It’s a legacy built one swimmer at a time. One family at a time. One lesson at a time. Sometimes, the best businesses aren’t measured by what they sell. They’re measured by the lives they change.
