Book Club Recap: Our July/August Journey Through Kindred
Across July and August, our book club stepped into Octavia Butler’s Kindred—a story that didn’t wait politely at the door but swept us straight into its storm. Month by month, chapter by chapter, we traveled with Dana as she was pulled between her present and a past that felt too heavy, too raw, and disturbingly alive.

What These Two Months Taught Us
As we read together, we felt the whiplash of Dana’s time jumps, the dread that built each time she was taken back, and the uneasy hope that she might survive long enough to return home. Those long summer evenings turned into conversations about how close history really is, how the past tugs at the present no matter how far we think we’ve come.
We noticed Butler’s boldness—how she refused to shield us from brutality, yet trusted us to sit with discomfort and grow through it. Her writing struck us with its clarity and its courage.

The Heart of Our Discussions
Over the course of July and August, our reflections deepened. We found ourselves asking:
- What would it feel like to confront the past in such a literal, unforgiving way?
- How do we carry generational trauma and still move toward healing?
- Where does agency begin when the world around you is designed to deny it?
- And how does love hold up under the weight of fear and power?
Voices in the group rose and intertwined—some sharing personal connections, others wrestling with moral questions, all of us leaning into the experience together.
What We’re Carrying Forward
Closing Kindred at the end of August felt like stepping out of a long, intense conversation with history itself. Butler’s story left a mark—quiet but unmistakable. It reminded us that the past is not gone; it echoes in families, in communities, in the ways we move through the world today.

And maybe that’s the gift of reading it as a group: we didn’t face those echoes alone. We faced them side by side, learning, listening, and lifting each other through the hard parts.
