Black Farmers Corner
Black Farmers Corner
“There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a farmer smile when he or she has a good crop and thinks about what to do with money from selling the extra produce,” Dr. Agnes Kalibata, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, said. At Vivian’s Door, we deeply understand and derive profound joy from seeing black farmers do well – have a good yield from the land, more cattle for grazing, or more land to till the soil on; it adds to their wealth, life, and the community. We recognize the historical significance of Black Americans in farming and their invaluable contributions to agriculture and food justice.
Historically, systemic oppression and land dispossession have created barriers for Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) in cultivating their own lands and communities. As a result, fewer Black Americans have had the opportunity to engage in farming, impacting their representation within the industry. However, we firmly believe it’s time to reclaim the land and restore dignity to people of color.
Our mission at Vivian’s Door is to shed light on the plight of Black farmers (BIPOC) through our dedicated Black Farmers Corner. In this corner, we aim to support and
empower Black farmers in reclaiming their rightful place in the agriculture industry. We stand as advocates, working with our supporters to create a sustainable future for their communities and foster economic growth. Our vision is to bridge the gap, address systemic injustices, and provide opportunities for Black farmers to flourish.
The Discrimination Financial Assistance Program
The Discrimination Financial Assistance Program, established under Section 22007 of the Inflation Reduction Act by the Biden-Harris administration, is dedicated to helping farmers who have faced discrimination in USDA loan applications. This program offers financial compensation to eligible agricultural producers who have encountered past inequalities when seeking loans for their farming operations. If any farmers in your circle or area have experienced discrimination before January 1, 2021, they may be eligible for compensation of up to $500,000. Click here to learn more about DCAP.
We will have a Technical Assistance event on December 17th from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm to help any farmers who attend the meeting get their paperwork completed and ready for submission.
